This turned into the weekend of the re-enactment fair purely by chance. Debs called last week to say that there was some sort of re-enactment fair at Derby University, so we called Chris and Karen and arranged to meet up with them yesterday. It turned out to be a bit of a laugh, but mostly had militaria stuff – lots of WWII and Civil War stuff for sale. It was a bit off in parts, and Karen and I had fun looking at lots of 1940′s clothes and hats. Actually we tried on lots of hats with much hilarity. Rob got quite excited by the scaled down motorised tanks (complete with realistic rumbling noises when they moved about). I’m not quite sure why people would want to buy SS insignia, however. I find that a bit distasteful, given that there are still plenty of WWII survivors about. I’m not saying that it should all be forgotten – that would be unforgiveable, but I’m still not sure why you’d want to dress up and do the re-enactment bit or purchase that sort of memorabilia.
Went and had a really nice pub lunch at the Horse and Jockey in Horsley – I’ve had a drink in there before, but never had their food. For the price, it was really nice, so we shall be eating there again for a treat.
Anyway, one of the traders at the Saturday fair told us that there was a better fair on at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre, so today, off we went. This one was much better, with loads of mediaeval stuff – some absolutely gorgeous shot silk embroidered dresses trimed with sable and chinchilla. Bought some white rabbit skins for my next project – trimming a cloak so that it matches my new hat (one I got for Xmas). Will try to post photos when it’s finished.
