Besties……

……they are not. But I think that it was so hot that Parsley and Cheeky Cat called a truce.

And then here’s Rusty Cat (called for his voice, which sounds like old socks being squeezed).

20120528-225440.jpg

Together with Ginger Ronnie and The Other Cat, the back gardens of the terrace are amply populated by felines.  The other small mammal population of the back fields do not stand a chance. Bats should quiver….as Parsley has been known to bring them down.

Rheas……

…… are for sale in the smallholding down the road from me!  Baby rheas!  The adults saunter grumpily about the paddock every day.  They remind me of fastidious old ladies peering over their glasses at something a bit stinky.  They’re very elegant.  I would like one but I don’t think my garden is big enough, so I will have to settle for a cat and the numerous furry/feathery things he drags in.  Last night’s score was Parsley 3, Voles nil.  At least they were dead when he danced in shrieking his happiness.  Nothing worse than chasing a hysterical vole with a hysterical cat in pursuit.

Watered & Fed……

…… plants and animals both. My cat, the neighbour’s cat, any random passing cat that pops in. All plants and seedlings also fed and watered. Lawn mowed.

Now to go and write a presentation on the dullest subject ever. IMCA DOLS S39A, S39C and S39D instructions and their purpose. If you have ever given a duller presentation, please let me know. I leave you with photos of the interesting bit of my day:

Sore thumb……

…… funky plaster.

In unrelated news, I spent some time gardening this evening. Accompanied by Ronnie, who was “helping” by leaping hysterically at everything.

Moar planting……

…… in the garden today.

20120415-183815.jpg
Put the lettuce plantlings in and planted the pea seeds. Bunged some spinach, spring onion and pak choi seeds too.

20120415-184022.jpg
Had to bodge up some netting with Rob to stop the cats digging everything up. The bastards. They need reminding that this bed is not the terrace’s largest litter tray constructed just for them. Already, I have had to replant some sweet peas and remove some poo.

The tomatoes are doing well.

And Ronnie met Ruby. Not sure it was a roaring success. There was barking and scrabbling (Ruby) and hissing and bristling (Ronnie).  They both retreated in the end.  Don’t know about Ruby, but Ronnie looked a bit dis-chuffed with the whole encounter.

Excitingly, we also went to the tip and got rid of several bags of garden waste.  Woo – it’s the fast life in Derbyshire :)

IKEA……

…… sell this. What do you think it is?!

20120406-130747.jpgHere’s a clue……..20120406-185436.jpg

It’s coconut fibre.  For rehydrating and planting in.  Or “coconut snot” as it is now known.  Lovely.  However, it kinda did the job in bulking out the raised bed compost-filling epic.  We’re still not finished.20120406-185455.jpgRob does the mixing of the coco-snot.

The neighbour’s catling investigates.

20120406-185532.jpg

I finish planting up the bronze fennel, sage bush (refugees from the old herb bed), the lemon balm section I saved, sweet mint and spearmint and a wee thyme plant.  The rosemary is waiting until more compost is purchased tomorrow.  Moar compost!!

20120406-185544.jpg

I took advantage of a half-price growhouse offer in the garden centre, so that will get put up over the weekend, and I can grow on all the salad crops in there before planting them out in the new bed.  We also humphed a big pile of old salvaged bricks from one end of the garden to the other.  These are all now neatly stacked up at the end of the garden ready to have the old bits of cement chipped off them.  They will then be laid on the diagonal along the edge of the lawn to create a proper edge.  That’s the plan anyway.

Vegetable beds……

…… under construction today.  Rob did the bulk of the sawing and building.  Undercalculated by 2 planks of wood, so I’ll go and get them this week. Then I need to get a shit-load of compost. We could only fill up one end bit of the bed, so I was able to replant the peony and the sage bush. Everything else is just heeled in and will be planted properly next week. Time will tell if the peony survived the trauma.  The honeysuckle has also been moved to outside one end of the bed, and will need training up over the fence.  Parsley came in at the end and sat in the partly filled bed.  I was worried he was having a poo, but no, he was just sitting down comfortably and surveying his domain.

Digging……

…… took place today. From the chives along past the sage and fennel to just before the peonies.  Parsley took an interest, but I suspect only from a freshly-dug poo site perspective.  Next week, we shall go and buy some timber to construct a raised bed about 3 meters long.  I was looking for a “ready to assemble” one but they’re all expensive and crap and the wrong dimensions.  So we shall build one.  Moving the existing herbs will be fun and I hope they survive.  The sage and fennel have been there for about 8 years so they should do.  I’m less bothered about the chives.  Hopefully, I will be growing rocket, pak choi and random other herbs and veggies.  I’ll keep the herbs at one end and the veg at the other.  The next project will then be to sort out the “rockery” area, which is less rocky alpines and more manky weeds and ivy.  I’ll do that; Rob can help with the heavy lifting.  And tend to his lawn.

Parsley’s tongue……

095, originally uploaded by Fairy Basslet.

Sweet wee hairy bugger. Asleep with his tongue sicking out – he does this quite often.

Goodbye Big Plec……

The Big Plec

…… you were getting old (for a fish) and a bit big for the tank.  Gone to the Big Fish Tank in the Sky. Now Parsley will eat all your algae tablets, cos he’s a wierdo cat.  In other news, I had to clear about 5 inches of snow off the car this morning to go to the gym.  Then it all partly melted and now it’s all frozen again.  Skating to work tomorrow, then.
