LRP (or live role play) is not as dodgy as it sounds – it grew out of tabletop gaming, and means that I get to dress up and pretend to be someone else for the weekend. I currently play in the LT system as a Pict within the Bears Faction – think Scottish influenced but with much added silliness and giggles set in a fantasy world that has a atmosphere of the medieval with magic. I am often asked “is it like acting? Who writes the script?” It is acting (in an odd sort of way), but there is no script – there is a game world that we play in and a set of rules so that it all works, and we pretty much make it up as we go along within those parameters. Wearing outlandishly silly constumes is not a requirement, but it is more fun.
I have also done Cthulhu 1920′s LRP – based on the fiction writing of HP Lovecraft, August Derleth et al. This is much more intense with a small group of people and requires a reasonable amount of research about the historical period and events of the time. And you get to fritter time and money on Ebay looking for genuine 1920′s clothing or very good reproductions. Odd, I know, but hey – everyone needs a hobby….. Have a look at the link in the blogroll.
